For teams who can execute but keep pointing at the wrong thing
Some companies do not need an agency. They have writers, developers and a marketing lead. What they lack is someone who has seen enough sites to say which of the fifteen plausible priorities is the one that matters this quarter.
That is what this is. Monthly advisory, not fulfilment.
In short
Ongoing advisory for in-house teams. Direction, prioritisation, review of work in progress, and a second opinion on decisions before you commit to them.
From [ $X ] per month
Month to month. If a quarter goes by where I am not earning it, say so and we stop.
Symptoms
When teams bring me in
We have a roadmap but we are not sure it is the right one.
Plenty of good ideas, no confident ranking of them.
Our writers are producing and nothing ranks.
Usually a targeting problem rather than a quality problem.
Development wants a business case.
SEO fixes compete with features, and “Google prefers it” is not a business case.
We are about to migrate.
The single highest-risk moment in a site’s life, and the one most often handled without an SEO in the room.
We hired someone junior and they need support.
Capable, keen, and understandably out of their depth on the hard calls.
In every one of those, the constraint is judgement rather than capacity. Buying more execution does not fix it.
What consulting covers
What you are actually buying
Not hours, and not deliverables for the sake of having something to show. The value is in the decisions you avoid getting wrong.
1
Prioritisation
A ranked view of what to do next and, more usefully, what to stop doing. Most roadmaps are too long rather than too short.
2
Review before you commit
Briefs, templates, architecture decisions and migration plans, looked at before they ship rather than diagnosed afterwards.
3
Upskilling your team
Every recommendation comes with the reasoning. The intent is that you need me less over time, not more.
4
A second opinion
On agency proposals, tool purchases, and any advice that sounds confident but expensive. Often the cheapest part of the engagement.
What you get
Access, judgement and a short list
Deliberately light on documents. The output is better decisions, and documents are only produced where they genuinely help someone act.
- A standing call. Weekly or fortnightly, with whoever needs to be on it.
- A live priority list. Short, ranked, and revised as things change — not a 60-page strategy that ages badly.
- Review on request. Briefs, specs, templates and migration plans, looked at before they go live.
- Async access. Questions answered between calls, because most decisions do not wait for the next meeting.
- Honest escalation. If the work needs a specialist or a bigger intervention than advisory, I will tell you rather than stretch the engagement.
How it runs
How consulting runs
1
Baseline
An initial diagnostic so my advice is grounded in your site rather than general principles. Usually the audit.
2
Set the priorities
Agree what the next quarter is actually for, and what gets deliberately ignored.
3
Regular calls
Progress, blockers, and decisions that need making. Your team does the work.
4
Review and adjust
What moved, what did not, and what that tells us. Priorities change when the evidence does.
Fit
Who consulting suits
Worth it if
- You have people who can execute — writers, developers, a marketing lead
- You want to build capability in-house rather than outsource it permanently
- You have decisions coming up that are expensive to get wrong
- You would rather understand the reasoning than receive a report
Not worth it if
- You need someone to do the work — that is a different engagement
- There is nobody to act on the advice
- You want a monthly deliverable to show a stakeholder
- You are looking for a name to put on a proposal
FAQ
Questions about consulting
How is this different from the audit?
The audit is a one-off diagnosis with a fixed scope and a clear end. Consulting is ongoing judgement applied as things come up. Most consulting engagements start with an audit, because advice without a baseline is guesswork.
How much of your time do we get?
A standing call plus async access between calls. I deliberately do not sell blocks of hours, because it makes people ration questions — and the cheap questions are often the ones that save the most money.
Will you do the work as well?
Sometimes, and it is a separate conversation. If your team can do it, they should — it is cheaper and the knowledge stays with you. If a specific piece genuinely needs me, I will say so.
Do you work with our existing agency?
Frequently, and it works well when everyone is clear on roles. I advise and prioritise, they execute. It goes badly only when the arrangement is a covert audit of their work — if that is what you want, say so up front.
What if we do not need you after six months?
Then it worked. Building capability in-house is the point, and I would rather leave a team that no longer needs me than manufacture reasons to stay.
Let us see whether advisory is the right shape
Tell me about the team and what you are trying to decide. If you need execution rather than direction, I will tell you that.
